What is 5G technology and how it works?

5G TECHNOLOGY

Millimeter wave spectrum

  • The 5G network will operate in millimeter wave spectrum (30-300 GHz).  More data can be sent at high speeds through this network as the higher the frequency the less likely it will be affected by the surrounding signals.

 Advance LTE

  • 5G is the latest long term evolution in mobile broadband network.

 Internet speed

  • 5G high-band spectrum has recorded internet speeds of 20GBPS (gigabits per second), while 4G internet speeds are 1 GBPS.
  • In 5G network, downlink speed will be 20GB / s and uplink speed will be 10GB / s.

 Band in 5G

  • 5G operates primarily in 3 bases (low, medium, and high frequency spectrum), all with their own usage and limitations.

 Low band spectrum

  •  It has internet speed and maximum speed of data exchange up to 100 MBPS.

  Medium band spectrum

  • It has higher internet speeds than low band spectrum, although its coverage area and signals have some limitations.

 High band spectrum

  • It has higher speeds than the other two bands, but has very limited coverage and signal penetration.

Barriers to 5G technology

 Infrastructure

  • For a 5G communications system, fundamental changes will need to be made to the existing infrastructure.  Data cannot be transferred over long distances in 5G technology.  Hence the need to enable infrastructure for 5G technology.

 The financial burden on consumers

  • To get 5G technology, one has to buy a new phone, which will increase the financial burden on the consumers.

 Inadequacy of capital

  • Telecom companies (like Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea) lack sufficient capital to buy high value 5G spectrum.

 Utility of 5G application

  • 5G technology could be an important promoter of the Fourth Industrial Revolution through clouding, big data, edge computing, etc.

 For India

  • 5G networks can improve access to services such as mobile banking and healthcare and create new jobs.

 Policy to enable 5G

 National Telecommunication Policy-2017

  • The purpose of this policy is to transform India into a digitally strong economy and society.  This work will meet the information and communication needs of citizens and enterprises by establishing a universal, flexible and affordable digital communication infrastructure and services.
  • Consumer Oriented and Application Based National Communication Policy - 2018 will lead us to new ideas and innovations after the launch of leading technologies like GG, LoT, M2M

 Global progress on 5G

  • Global telecom companies have begun building 5G networks and are now making them available to customers in many countries.
  • 5G has been introduced by the United States in its 50 cities.
  • It has been launched in 85 cities by South Korea.
  • Japan and China have also started testing the Pun mobile service.
